UPS and FedEx are both alternatives, although probably more expensive than the Post Office.
If you are shipping tapes or DVDs you can ask the Post Office for "media" rate, cheapest but slowest. Priority, of course, is fastest and most expensive. The Post Office does not consider flash drives to be "media."
Padded envelopes work well for shipping one or two cased DVDs. A small box padded with crumpled newspaper works well for VHS tapes and multiple DVDs. Bubble wrap is the packer's friend; foam "worms" ensure safety but can be messy.
