Proscenium: The so-called "picture frame" stage, in which the stage setting is framed by a temporary (frontispiece) or permanent (proscenium) arch.
Documented as early as 1600 as a permanent architectural arch in Giovan Battista Aleotti's plan and elevation of the Teatre degli Intrepidi, in the Duchy of Parma.
